IHC- Kia and Ora
IHC advocates for the rights, inclusion and welfare of all people with an intellectual disability, and supports them to lead satisfying lives in the community.
IHC is New Zealand’s largest provider of services to people with intellectual disabilities and their families. It is a membership organisation, with a history that reaches back more than 60 years to a small group of families who set up the very first association to lobby for better rights for their children.
M.S.O. Design delivered the first brief to Loudmouth back in 2007, since then it has been an ongoing evolving project. The brief was to design a character who was bright, engaging and user friendly who would be used on a variety of collateral to promote health and safety amongst IHC clients. The character needed to be flexible enough to be shown in various situations and collateral and also needed an illustrator that could work on developing the character over a number of years as the programme develops.
Ora was the original character that Loudmouth was asked to create and was recently joined by Kia his younger blue penguin cousin. This character was developed to appeal to the younger section of the IHC audience and also show the benefits of getting help from others.
Loudmouth worked with both the client and the design company to create the storyboards and scenarios for the characters to ensure the communication was clear. The end result was well received and effective in spreading the health and safety message within the organisations, so successful the campaign is still running 6 years after its introduction.
